Ayushmann Khurrana becomes the new prem for Sooraj Barjatya’s next untitled love story – Deets inside

Over the years, Sooraj Barjatya has earned a reputation as a master of family entertainers, with films like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Vivah, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and Oonchai, among others. Widely regarded as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of contemporary cinema, Barjatya is now gearing up for his next directorial project. According to exclusive reports from Pinkvilla, Barjatya has signed Ayushmann Khurrana to play the lead role in his upcoming film, marking a new chapter in his career.

Ayushmann Khurrana to be Sooraj Barjatya’s new Prem

Sources close to the development revealed that the untitled family romantic saga has an exceptional script, which required the presence of a hero from the younger generation. “Sooraj ji was looking for someone who resonates with family audiences, and who better than Ayushmann Khurrana to take on the role of the new-age Prem,” the source shared. It was also noted that Ayushmann was drawn to the world Barjatya is looking to create and immediately connected with the project. Barjatya, on the other hand, believes Ayushmann has the right innocence and charm to embody the iconic character of Prem.

Set within the framework of Indian culture and keeping in mind modern filmmaking sensibilities, the film is expected to go on floors in the summer of 2025. “Ayushmann Khurrana and Sooraj Barjatya have already established a strong rapport, and Barjatya is now looking to cast a leading actress for the female protagonist role. Once the lead pair is finalised, Barjatya will proceed to cast the ensemble for the film,” the source added.

This yet-to-be-titled saga will mark Ayushmann Khurrana’s first foray into the world of pure love stories centred around family, and is slated to release in 2026. For many, the character of Prem has become synonymous with Salman Khan in Sooraj Barjatya’s films. However, come 2026, Ayushmann Khurrana will bring his own unique flavour to this beloved role in a traditional family romantic drama.
